How long is bac water good for depends on whether the vial has been opened. Every vial runs on two clocks, and the one that runs out first wins:
- The expiration date printed on the label, which applies to the sealed vial stored as directed.
- The beyond-use date after the stopper is first punctured: within 28 days, unless the manufacturer specifies a different date.
A sealed vial with an expiry two years away is still limited to 28 days once it is opened. An opened vial whose printed expiry arrives in ten days is limited to those ten days. Keep both dates in view and use whichever is earlier.
Does bac water expire?

If the printed expiration date on that same vial were October 15, October 15 would be the limit instead, because it comes first. The clock starts at the first puncture, not at purchase and not at delivery. A sealed vial sitting in a drawer is governed only by its printed expiry.
A simple dating habit
Write the first-puncture date and the discard date directly on the vial label the moment you open it, using a pen that will not smear. Doing the arithmetic once, at the start, means nobody has to guess later. Different products carry different storage conditions and time limits after reconstitution.
What you can do is record everything the label will need later. Once you have mixed a vial using the reconstitution steps, mark it with:
- The date it was reconstituted.
- What is in it and the vial amount in mg.
- The volume of diluent added and the resulting concentration in mg/mL.
Then store and discard it according to its own labeling.
Matching vial size to the 28-day window
Because an opened vial has a 28-day limit, a larger vial is not automatically better value. What matters is how many full reconstitutions you would realistically make from it within 28 days of opening.
