Three values control the calculation
- Amount listed on the vial: the total mass, commonly shown in mg or mcg.
- BAC-water volume: the liquid volume, shown in mL.
- Amount to measure: a visitor-entered mass used only for arithmetic.
The calculation
Convert mass to one unit first: 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg. Concentration equals vial amount in mg divided by liquid volume in mL. Liquid volume equals the amount entered in mg divided by concentration in mg/mL. A U-100 scale conversion multiplies mL by 100.
Why there is no universal ratio
Adding more liquid lowers the concentration; adding less liquid raises it. That mathematical relationship does not determine which diluent or volume is appropriate for a particular product. Official labeling or qualified professional instructions control.
Handling context
CDC says aseptic technique is essential and a new sterile needle and syringe should be used when accessing a medication vial. Single-dose and multi-dose labels matter; a preservative does not eliminate contamination risk.
